Room with a View

If you've been following this blog you might recall that beautiful Thumsee, Germany, just outside of Salzburg, Austria is one of my favorite places in the world. We visited this small Alpine lake last weekend and awakened Saturday morning to a light dusting of snow. The view from our room at Pension Hubertus was, to me, staggeringly beautiful. I do so love this place!

  1. What a pity that we didn't meet! Indeed, the lake is very beautiful (again) with this fresh snow - in between it was a bit dreary, not winter any more but not really with a springtime-feeling.

  2. Hi, Markus,
Let's meet another time when I don't have guests (as we did last weekend). In the words of a famous Austrian, "I'll be back!" Even on dreary days there's something to love about Thumsee.

  3. Hi Martha,
Sorry to write to you here, but I couldn't find your e-mail address.
My name is Kendel and I found your blog through expatblogs. My boyfriend and I are going to be in Vienna 5 days and I was wondering what you would include on a "Must See List." I've enjoyed reading about your life in Austria but am overwhelmed by the options of activities. We'll be staying in Vienna but would also like to do a day trip or two to nearby cities. What would you recommend we see, do and eat? If you have a few minutes and wouldn't mind writing me back, I'd really appreciate it.

Keep up the good work on your blog!

    Thanks,
    Kendel

  4. Hi Kendel,
If you tell me what your interests are I'll be happy to tell you what I think you might like most. Also, how many days will you be in Vienna? If you leave me your email address I won't publish it and will reply privately to you. For now, I'm checking your blog to learn more about your interests.

    Cheers!
    Martha

  5. My mouth is watering after looking at your blog. What a resource! I can’t wait to try many of your recipes. Thanks for writing. I read about you and now have a better idea what you might like to do in Vienna and on a side trip. I’ve done posts on quite a few of these places so just use the search feature on the top of the right column to see photos and a write-up.

    Trips 2-3 Days
Hallstatt (if you’re driving and love Nature, stay at Gosausee at Gasthaus Gosausee but ask for room facing the lake...fabulous views of glacier and stars if weather is clear; however, the lake is used for hydroelectric power and is lower, and not as pretty, this time of year). Hallstatt is the quintessential European village, snuggled between the lake and the mountain. You can visit the salt mines, if open, and the slides there are quite fun. Bone house with lovingly-painted skulls is quite interesting. Lots of shops. Can rent an electric boat and have lunch on the lake when the weather is good.
Salzburg (again, if you’re driving and love Nature, stay at Pension Hubertus at Thumsee, my favorite place, although this is not the best time of year to visit. Have dinner with Monika, the chef at Madlbauer on Thumsee. Nearby Inzell has great cross-country ski trails and Bad Reichenhall’s Rupertus Therme is a great thermal, salt-water spa with floating pools. There’s lots to see in Salzburg (Mirabell Gardens, the Wedding Room, Getreidegasse with it’s wrought iron signs and Mozart’s birthplace, the castle, lots of cathedrals, the cemetery, etc.
If you are driving you could go to Hallstatt and see most of it and go to Salzburg in 2-3 days. You might want to return to Germany through Cesky Krumlov, CZ. Great medieval village, well worth seeing.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, let me know.
