The art nouveau font of the Hotel Josefshof's sign and the hotel's squeaky wooden parquet floors recall an earlier age. In 1879, the artist Alphonse Mucha, famous for his art nouveau designs, moved to Vienna, painting theater sets at the nearby Ring Theater until it burned down in 1881. I haven't been able to locate the history of the Hotel Josefshof to determine if it had any connection to the artist but I'm reminded of his beautiful art every time I pass by this unusual sign.
