  1. I´m not sure if I like this new building... By the way, I posted a photo of this hotel some time ago on my blog: http://vrenisviennadailyphoto.blogspot.co.at/2012/04/bulls-eyes.html

  2. Love your perspective on your photo. We have not been close to it yet. It certainly stands out and I suppose that's what the owner and architect wanted, but it does seem that it would more appropriate, design-wise, in a different part of the city. Still, I'm no expert on such matters.

  3. It would be lovely if you would include the locations of some of your un-titled photographs. Aside from that teeney nitpick, I love your site and always look forward to your charming offerings -- even when they so easily make me homesick!

    1. Often I wish I had written down the location as well. I'd be happy to comply with your request if I can but that is going to mean I have to carry (and use) a notepad and pen or develop a much better memory. If I'm walking with someone else, which I often am, it's a lot to ask them to keep pausing while I take photos and I don't have the heart to ask them to pause longer while I write down the location...but if I can only talk them into writing down the location, we'll have guaranteed success ;-). I'll try to do better.

Apparently it's the Hotel Topazz. I took this photo from Rotenturmstrasse looking toward Lichtensteg. This is as close as we got as we were en route to somewhere. Check out Vreni's photo for a completely different perspective: http://vrenisviennadailyphoto.blogspot.co.at/2012/04/bulls-eyes.html and the hotel website has some intriguing shots as well.

    2. Thanks, Martha, for your reply and info! As an avid amateur photographer I perfectly understand losing track of a particular photo's what, where and when. Nevermind, your pictures and descriptions are pretty much perfect as they are.

A little off-topic -- have you visited the charming "Huette am Weg" restaurant, just behind Kahlenberg? So charming and a photographer's goldmine, I think. Cousins took me there last year and I was enthralled. Vienna is such a treat to visit.(How ever did I end up living in Florida??)

    3. No, we haven't been there yet but we always like finding new places so maybe we can go this weekend. Thanks for the tip!

  4. Interesting picture. Perhaps this building is getting a new set of lenses fitted. Perhaps it was becoming near sighted? (Perhaps Vienna doesn't have strong zoning laws that would restrict the look of a building?)

    1. Haha! They do appear to be specs, don't they?

I called Vienna's Architecture Museum to get an answer to your question and the woman I spoke to said you can build modern buildings in the First District (the oldest part of town) but you have to be careful not to damage the old buildings and referred me to the Mayor's office and the Planning Department. Not wishing to give you an incomplete answer but also not inclined to go through the bureaucracy structure to shed more light on the subject, I'll leave it at her answer for now. Let me know if you want me to pursue a more complete answer.

    2. Hi Martha. I believe you have gone beyond my expectations in answering my question. Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I have no intention of assigning you a task requiring entering city bureaucracy. Much better that you should spend your time walking somewhere with your camera. While the Hotel Topazz doesn't fit well with surrounding buildings, I rather like the look of this building. It has lines and shapes like the "modern" deco look of the 1930s which has produced some stunning designs. Your photo has the added interest of the high lift so workers can do something up there.
