One of Vienna's Elegant Coffee Houses

The elegant Cafe Schwarzenberg, one of the grande dame coffee houses of Vienna, is a great place to go for breakfast or a leisurely coffee.  With its tiled ceilings, crystal chandeliers, arched windows and wood paneling it is an homage to both another century and the concept of civilization.

If you're interested in viewing an amazing compendium of photographs of Vienna's coffee houses and other mouth-watering coffee photos, visit Merisi's Vienna for Beginners.  She has taken so many photos of coffee that I felt almost guilty taking a photo of my own cappuccino. There's a link to her site in the Blog Roll on the right.  Enjoy!

  1. I've just recently started following your blog and I'm enjoying the pictures of Vienna. Your elegant coffee houses sure look a lot nicer than the Starbucks that have popped up all over the US. Thanks for sharing. I love the pictures of Vienna.

  2. Welcome, Ed! Vienna has retained the beauty of its once imperial past but, actually, I think much of the architecture in the US that dates from the 1800s has great charm today. Regarding Starbucks, though, I'll tell you a secret: Our American palates have a bit of a hard time with Vienna's famous—but very dry—Sacher torts so whenever we crave a decadent slice of chocolate cake we go to Starbucks...for us, it's the best chocolate cake in town.

  3. You made me smile, thank you, Martha! :-)))

You'll have noticed that I have not had a Sacher either. A great-aunt of mine liked to bake one, and I never took a liking to it. A good American brownie (Gourmet's triple chocolate!) beats it every day. ;-)

I do love Demel's Annatorte. I always say it taste like a very sophisticated Nutella cake, only way better, due to Demel's first class ingredients. I only get it once or twice a year, and I need somebody to share it with me, to make me feel less guilty.

  4. Love Demel's tasty cakes and beautiful shop. Will be sure to try their Annatorte this summer. Thanks, Merisi, for the tip. I gained five pounds in the first year of living in Vienna, thanks to 'having' to sample all the fabulous pastries here. Still working to get it off...but the 'research' was a necessary part of understanding Vienna.

  5. Martha, I empathise! People don't realise how how tough it is to rough it amongst all those tempting pastries! :-)
