Above Gosausee, Austria. When we questioned the significance of fir twigs attached to doors of a log cabin on the slopes above Gosausee, the Austrian sitting next to us didn't know the purpose but he asked an older man who confidently gave us an explanation I absolutely love. A common Alpine practice throughout Europe, the shorter part of the twig is moveable and when it points upward the weather will be fine; when it points downward, rain or snow is forecast—a rustic weather station. That's forecasting out on a limb.
